Does Extended Health Insurance Cover Counselling in BC?
Many workplace and student plans include mental health benefits, but “counselling coverage” does not automatically mean every therapist or registration is eligible.
Start with the practitioner’s registration
Pegasus has practitioners registered as RCC, RSW and CCC. Your plan may cover one designation but not another, or may place them in different benefit categories. The safest approach is to confirm the exact therapist and registration with your insurer before a paid appointment.
Ask your insurer these five questions
- Does my plan cover this therapist’s registration: RCC, RSW or CCC?
- What percentage or dollar amount is reimbursed per visit?
- How much remains in my annual benefit?
- Do I need a physician’s referral or prior approval?
- Are virtual, couples or family sessions eligible?
Coverage, direct billing and reimbursement are different
Coverage means your plan may reimburse an eligible service. Direct billing means the clinic can submit a claim to the insurer on your behalf when available. Reimbursement means you pay first and submit the receipt yourself. A plan can provide coverage even when direct billing is unavailable.
Direct billing is not a guarantee that an insurer will pay the full amount. Deductibles, plan limits, coordination of benefits, claim review or other conditions may leave a balance.
Confirm the benefit year and remaining balance
Some plans reset by calendar year, while student or workplace plans may use a different benefit period. Ask for the reset date, the remaining amount and whether counselling shares a combined maximum with psychology, social work or other mental health services.
If two plans may apply, ask both insurers how coordination of benefits should be submitted. Do not assume the second plan will automatically receive the claim.
Check what appears on the receipt
When you ask the insurer about eligibility, use the therapist’s professional designation rather than only the general term “counsellor.” If you require specific receipt details or a referral, clarify this before your appointment.
Student and workplace benefits need the same verification
University and employer plans can change between policy years. A classmate or colleague may have a different level of coverage even under a plan with a similar name. Check the current plan booklet or contact the insurer directly.
How Pegasus can help
Our front desk can tell you the therapist’s registration, provide current service information and check whether direct billing can be attempted. Only the insurer can make the final decision about eligibility and payment under your plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does every extended health plan cover counselling?
No. Coverage depends on the individual plan and the practitioner registration accepted by that plan.
Does direct billing guarantee payment?
No. Availability and the amount paid depend on the insurer, plan and claim response. Any unpaid balance remains the client’s responsibility.
Should I confirm the therapist before booking?
Yes. Give your insurer the therapist’s name and registration type and ask whether that specific service is eligible.
